The SEO Visibility Toolkit

I ran this site for years with exactly one measurement tool, and it was the wrong kind. Plausible counts page loads. It cannot tell you whether you appeared in a search result and were ignored, because it never sees anyone who didn't click. Everything upstream of the click was invisible, and I didn't notice because the number it did show was going up.

This is the map I wish I'd had — organised by the question each tool answers, because the vendor categories cut across the questions and make everything look interchangeable when it isn't.

The questions, and what answers them

The four that matter on day one

Everything above sorts into "set this up now" and "maybe later, probably never." The now list is four items and costs nothing.

Google Search Console. The only source of impressions, and therefore the only way to distinguish not being found from being found and not clicked. Those have opposite fixes — one is content and indexing, the other is titles and descriptions — and no analytics tool can tell them apart.

The urgent part: it does not backfill. Not one day. Collection starts at verification and everything prior is destroyed, not withheld. Every day unverified is data you can never have. Verify a domain property rather than a URL prefix so it covers apex, www, both protocols and every subdomain at once.

Bing Webmaster Tools. Easy to dismiss as the small one, and that's a mistake in 2026 for a reason that has nothing to do with Bing's market share: it has a dedicated AI Search Performance dashboard reporting how often your content is cited in AI-generated answers. That is the only free source of AI-citation data anywhere, and Bing's index feeds ChatGPT's search. If you care about AI traffic, this is not the second-tier tool — it's the only tier.

It also imports your Search Console configuration in one click, so it costs about two minutes once Google is done. Same no-backfill property.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. Free forever for sites you verify — not a trial. Site Audit against 170+ technical checks, Site Explorer for your own organic keywords and backlink profile. In 2026 it also flags pages that rank well traditionally but are absent from AI Overviews, which is a specific and actionable gap.

The limitation is the point of the free tier: your own sites only. You cannot look at a competitor. That's what the $100+/month buys, and for a solo operator it is usually not worth it.

An analytics tool. Plausible here. Post-click behaviour, which the webmaster tools don't report. Any of them work; this is the one slot where the choice barely matters.

What the paid tools actually sell

Worth being blunt, because the listicles are affiliate-driven and won't say it.

Nearly every paid SEO platform is priced for agencies managing client portfolios, and the thing you're buying is data about sites you don't own: competitor backlinks, their keyword coverage, their traffic estimates. If you aren't running competitive analysis, you are paying a lot for a nicer interface to data you already get free.

The exception is rank tracking at scale. If you need daily positions for hundreds of keywords across many domains, the free tools won't do it and a paid one will. That's a real need for some people and not one I have.

AI-visibility tools are the genuinely new category, and the honest summary is that the market is fifteen months old, nobody publishes methodology, and the numbers vendors quote about freshness and citation rates should be read as marketing until someone replicates them. Bing's free dashboard covers the basic question — am I being cited — well enough that I'd want a specific reason before paying.

What this doesn't cover, and it's the interesting gap

None of these tell you how ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity see you directly. There is no console, no verification, no impressions report. Bing's dashboard is a proxy because its index feeds some of them; the paid tools work by running prompt sets and counting mentions, which is sampling, not measurement.

The one real control surface is openai-domain-verification, a TXT record proving you own a domain to OpenAI. I found one already on this site's apex from some earlier setup — worth checking for on yours, and worth adding if absent, because it's the only handle that exists.

Everything else in AI visibility is currently inference. That will change, and probably fast.

Seeing it regularly

Setting these up is the easy half. The failure mode is verifying everything, looking once, and never returning — at which point you have instruments and still no idea how you're doing.

All three webmaster tools have APIs. This site already pulls Plausible server-side to render its most-popular list, so the shape of the fix is known: one scheduled job against Search Console, Bing and Plausible, one small store, one page. Multi-site is where it earns its keep — six properties checked by hand is six logins nobody performs, while six properties on one page is a glance.

That's the next build, and it's a better use of an afternoon than any paid subscription on this page.

What I'm running

Free tier, all of it: Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools on six domains, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Plausible. Nothing paid.

The gap is that I only started collecting in August 2026, so I have no history — which is the one problem money genuinely cannot fix. If you take one thing from this: verify today, even if you won't look for six months. The data can only start when you ask for it, and the version of you in six months cannot go back and ask earlier.
